The pendulous flower clusters can reach up to 30cm in length and often appear before the new foliage emerges, creating a spectacular display of colour.

Throughout spring and summer, fresh mid-green foliage develops into a dense, leafy canopy, making Chinese Wisteria an excellent choice for covering large pergolas, arches and other sturdy garden structures. Its leaves fall in autumn, allowing sunlight through during winter.

A versatile and long-lived climber, Chinese Wisteria can also be trained into a standard tree form to create a striking garden feature or grown as a bonsai. Its vigorous growth makes it particularly suitable for larger gardens where there is plenty of room to establish a strong framework.

Mature size: approximately 7 metres high, with a spread dependent on available support and regular pruning.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, ideally in a position protected from strong winds. Chinese Wisteria tolerates a range of soil types and becomes relatively drought tolerant once established, although regular watering is important during establishment and extended dry periods.

Provide a strong, permanent support structure, as mature Wisteria develops substantial woody stems that can become very heavy over time.

Prune regularly during summer to control vigorous growth and encourage the development of short flowering spurs. A second prune in winter, while the plant is dormant, helps maintain its shape and promotes flowering the following spring.

When growing as a standard, maintain a strong central trunk and regularly remove unwanted shoots to develop a balanced canopy.

Avoid excessive high-nitrogen fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Ideal for
– Large pergolas and arbours
– Garden arches
– Strong fences and climbing structures
– Training as a standard feature tree
– Bonsai growing
– Creating summer shade
– Cottage and formal gardens
– Fragrant spring displays
– Feature planting in larger gardens
