Description

Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’ is a refined dwarf Japanese Maple prized for its beautifully variegated foliage and compact upright habit. Delicate leaves emerge in soft shades of cream, light green and pink, creating a luminous effect that brightens shaded garden spaces. Its elegant form and distinctive colouring make it a popular choice for collectors, courtyard gardens and feature planting where subtle detail can be appreciated up close.
Throughout spring and summer, the finely textured foliage displays a unique blend of green leaves edged with creamy white, often flushed with soft pink tones on new growth. The variegation creates a light, airy appearance that stands out amongst darker garden plants. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into rich golden-yellow tones, providing a final seasonal display before leaf fall.
‘Butterfly’ is an excellent choice for smaller gardens due to its narrow growth habit and manageable size. It performs beautifully as a feature tree in courtyards, shaded borders and Japanese-inspired gardens. The compact form also makes it highly suitable for container growing, where the intricate foliage can be enjoyed on patios and balconies. It combines particularly well with azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and other cool-climate garden favourites.
Mature size: approximately 2.5 metres high × 1 metre wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’ in a sheltered position with morning sun or filtered light. Protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds will help preserve foliage colour and prevent leaf scorch.
Prefers cool, deep, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Good drainage is essential for healthy root development.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during warmer months, particularly in summer.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Japanese maples or deciduous trees in early spring.
Mulch around the base with organic material to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil health.
Minimal pruning is required. Remove any dead or crossing branches during winter dormancy if needed.
