Acer Dissectum Sunset - 40cm Pot

Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Sunset’ is a compact weeping Japanese Maple prized for its finely cut foliage and vibrant seasonal colour changes. This elegant ornamental tree develops a graceful cascading form, making it an excellent feature for smaller gardens, courtyards, rockeries and container planting. Its ever-changing foliage ensures interest from spring through to autumn, while its naturally weeping habit adds softness and movement to the landscape.

In spring, the delicate lace-like leaves emerge in fresh yellow-green tones with hints of lime green. As summer progresses, the foliage develops subtle red highlights around the leaf margins, creating a gentle contrast against the lighter centre of each leaf. When autumn arrives, the red colouring intensifies and spreads across the foliage, transforming the entire canopy into brilliant shades of fiery orange and red. This spectacular display gives the tree its fitting name, ‘Sunset’.

‘Sunset’ forms a naturally compact mound with cascading branches that arch and drape towards the ground. Its manageable size makes it ideal for smaller spaces where a full-sized tree may not be suitable. It works beautifully as a focal point in Japanese-style gardens, beside water features or amongst rocks and low-growing shrubs. The graceful form also makes it a popular choice for large decorative containers.


Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer dissectum ‘Sunset’ in a sheltered position with morning sun or part shade. While it tolerates more sun than some laceleaf maples, protection from harsh afternoon heat will help maintain the best foliage colour and prevent leaf scorch.

Prefers cool, deep, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Enrich the soil with organic matter before planting.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture through summer, particularly during hot or dry weather.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Japanese maples in early spring as new growth emerges.

Mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture, regulate root temperature and improve soil health.

Very little pruning is required beyond removing dead or damaged branches and maintaining the natural weeping form.
