Description

Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki’s Red Spire’ is a distinctive columnar Japanese Maple grown for its rich red foliage and naturally narrow upright form. As the only red columnar Japanese maple, it is highly valued for adding vertical colour and structure to smaller gardens, courtyards and tight planting spaces where wider maples may not fit comfortably.
Fresh spring foliage emerges in deep red tones before maturing into rich purple-red through summer. In autumn, the leaves transform again into brilliant scarlet red, creating a strong seasonal display. The narrow growth habit remains tidy and architectural throughout the year, while the bare winter framework continues to provide elegant structure in the garden.
‘Nishiki’s Red Spire’ is particularly useful for narrow garden beds, entrance planting, feature rows and modern landscapes where height is desired without excessive width. Its compact upright habit makes it ideal beside pathways, driveways and courtyard spaces, while still delivering the soft seasonal movement Japanese maples are known for. It also combines beautifully with evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses and layered woodland-style planting.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high × 1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Nishiki’s Red Spire’ in part shade or filtered light, especially in warmer Australian climates where protection from harsh afternoon sun helps prevent leaf scorch.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Ensure the graft union remains above soil level when planting.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture during dry weather, particularly through summer.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Japanese maples or deciduous trees when planting and again in spring as new growth appears.
Minimal pruning is needed due to its naturally narrow upright shape. Remove dead or crossing branches during winter dormancy if required.
Best suited to cool to temperate climates and benefits from shelter from strong hot winds.
Ideal for
– Narrow garden spaces

– Feature trees in modern gardens
– Vertical accent planting
