Description

Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ is a vibrant Japanese Maple grown for its luminous golden foliage and strong seasonal colour changes. This deciduous ornamental tree brings brightness to sheltered gardens with fresh yellow spring growth that gradually softens through summer before turning rich orange and gold in autumn. Its compact bushy habit and colourful foliage make it a popular feature tree for courtyards, smaller gardens and Japanese-inspired landscapes.
In spring, the finely cut leaves emerge in bright golden-yellow tones that stand out beautifully against darker garden planting. Through summer, the foliage develops softer green-yellow shades while maintaining a fresh appearance in protected positions. As autumn arrives, the tree transforms into warm burnt orange and golden tones before dropping its leaves for winter. Bright green bark provides additional interest during the cooler months, while small reddish-purple flowers may appear in spring followed by decorative red seed pods.
‘Orange Dream’ forms a graceful upright shrub or small tree that works beautifully as a feature planting near patios, entrances or garden paths where its changing seasonal colour can be appreciated up close. It combines particularly well with mosses, azaleas, camellias and other shade-tolerant plants. Its moderate size also makes it suitable for large containers and courtyard gardens.
Mature size: approximately 3–4 metres high × 2–3 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ in a sheltered position with morning sun or part shade. In cooler climates it can tolerate more sun, while protection from harsh afternoon heat and drying winds will help maintain the best foliage colour in warmer areas.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Mulching around the root zone will help retain moisture and keep roots cool during summer.
Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods, particularly through warmer weather.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Japanese maples or deciduous trees in early spring as new growth appears.
Minimal pruning is required beyond removing dead or damaged branches during winter dormancy. If planting conditions allow adequate space, shaping is rarely necessary.
Highly frost tolerant once established and well suited to cool and temperate Australian climates.
Ideal for
– Feature planting
– Japanese-style and woodland gardens
– Courtyard and small garden spaces
– Autumn foliage colour displays
– Pots and large container planting
– Layered planting with camellias and azaleas
