Description

Camellia japonica ‘Helenor’ is a beautiful winter-flowering camellia admired for its large formal double blooms and distinctive striped colouring. One of the most popular variegated camellias, ‘Helenor’ produces elegant soft pink flowers flecked and striped with deeper rose-pink tones, creating a unique display where no two blooms are exactly alike. Combined with its strong bushy growth habit and glossy evergreen foliage, it is an outstanding choice for feature planting and flowering screens.
From late autumn through winter, the shrub becomes covered in stunning double flowers that bring colour and interest to the garden when many other plants are dormant. The beautifully patterned blooms stand out against the rich dark green foliage, creating a classic camellia display. The glossy evergreen leaves remain attractive throughout the year, providing structure and screening even when the plant is not flowering.
‘Helenor’ develops a dense, bushy habit that makes it suitable as a specimen shrub, informal hedge or large container plant. It performs particularly well in woodland-style gardens and sheltered positions where the flowers can be enjoyed during the cooler months. Its reliable flowering and elegant appearance have made it a long-standing favourite among camellia enthusiasts.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Camellia japonica ‘Helenor’ in a position with morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled light beneath taller trees.
Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. In heavier soils, planting in a raised garden bed will improve drainage and root health.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during flowering and dry periods.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for camellias and acid-loving plants in spring after flowering. Avoid products containing lime.
Mulch generously with organic material to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil structure.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if required. Older plants can also be rejuvenated with heavier pruning when necessary.
Excellent for long-term container growing when planted in a premium quality potting mix and watered consistently.
Ideal for
– Feature flowering shrubs
– Winter garden colour
– Evergreen hedging and screening
– Woodland and shade gardens
– Pots and container growing
– Camellia and collector gardens
