Description

Camellia japonica ‘Katherine Nuccio’ is a striking evergreen camellia admired for its large formal double flowers and rich, vibrant colour. Producing impressive blooms up to 13cm across, this elegant variety is a favourite for creating a bold focal point in the garden during the cooler months. Combined with glossy dark green foliage and a naturally bushy habit, it provides year-round structure and seasonal beauty.
From winter into spring, ‘Katherine Nuccio’ produces masses of beautifully formed formal double flowers in rich deep pink to rosy-red tones. The perfectly layered blooms create a refined and elegant display that contrasts beautifully against the lustrous evergreen foliage. The large flowers make excellent cut blooms and provide a spectacular show when planted as a feature shrub or grouped in larger garden beds.
This camellia develops into a dense, rounded shrub that is ideal for feature planting, informal hedging, woodland gardens and mixed borders. Its glossy foliage remains attractive throughout the year, while its moderate size also makes it suitable for growing in large containers where the flowers can be enjoyed up close.
Mature size: approximately 2–3 metres high × 2–3 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Camellia japonica ‘Katherine Nuccio’ in full sun to part shade. In warmer climates, protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds will help maintain healthy foliage and prolong flowering.
Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during dry periods, particularly while buds and flowers are developing.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for camellias and other acid-loving plants in spring after flowering.
Mulch with quality organic mulch to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil structure, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.
Prune lightly after flowering if shaping is required. Heavy pruning is rarely necessary as camellias respond well to light maintenance.
Frost tolerant once established and well suited to cool and temperate Australian gardens.
Ideal for
– Feature flowering shrubs
– Evergreen hedging and screening
– Woodland and shade gardens
– Pots and container growing
– Mixed borders and specimen planting
