Sagina Subulata Pearlwort - 14cm Pot

Sagina subulata, commonly known as Pearlwort, is a low-growing evergreen ground cover valued for its soft moss-like appearance and ability to create a lush green carpet between pavers and stepping stones. Its fine textured foliage forms dense mounds that soften hard landscaping and bring a calm, natural feel to garden spaces. This compact spreading plant is especially popular in Japanese-inspired gardens, rockeries and modern courtyard designs.

During spring and summer, Pearlwort becomes dotted with tiny white flowers that sit just above the foliage, adding subtle seasonal interest without overwhelming the clean green texture. The bright green foliage stays attractive year-round in cooler conditions and creates a soft visual contrast against stone, gravel and timber elements.

Pearlwort works particularly well as a living filler between stepping stones, along pathways and around pond edges where its low height and spreading habit can be appreciated. It is also suitable for roof gardens, shallow containers and smaller urban spaces where a compact ground cover is needed. While delicate in appearance, Sagina subulata is surprisingly practical when planted in the right conditions and can gradually spread to form a dense mat over time.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Sagina subulata in full sun to part shade. In warmer climates, some protection from harsh afternoon sun will help keep the foliage looking fresh and green.

Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It performs best in cooler conditions where the soil does not dry out completely for extended periods.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent moisture during dry weather, especially when planted between pavers or in shallow soils.

Apply a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring if needed to encourage healthy growth.

Minimal pruning is required. Trim lightly if plants become uneven or begin to spread beyond desired areas.

Best suited to cool to temperate climates. May struggle in hot, exposed positions with prolonged dry heat.
