Scleranthus biflorus is a compact, evergreen Australian native ground cover valued for its soft, vibrant green foliage and natural mounding habit. Often described as a “living cushion,” this low-growing plant forms dense, rounded mats that provide year-round colour and texture in the garden.
In summer, Scleranthus biflorus produces subtle yellow-green flowers that sit gently within the foliage, adding seasonal interest without overpowering its clean, sculptural form. Its ability to soften hard edges makes it ideal for planting between pavers, cascading over retaining walls, or weaving through rockeries and stonework.
Highly versatile and easy to grow, this native thrives in both sunny and part-shade positions and adapts to a wide range of soil types, provided drainage is good. It is both drought and frost tolerant once established, making it a reliable choice for low-maintenance and waterwise gardens.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny to part-shade position. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce as the plant settles. Feed once or twice a year with a native fertiliser such as Osmocote to encourage healthy, lush growth. While pruning is not essential, a light annual trim will help maintain a dense, compact shape and promote fresh new growth.
