Hydrangea ‘Kyushu’ is an elegant, upright panicle hydrangea prized for its early flowering, refined foliage and long-lasting blooms. This deciduous shrub features glossy, dark green leaves that are noticeably narrower than many other paniculata hydrangeas, giving the plant a lighter, more graceful appearance.
One of the earliest hydrangeas to bloom, Kyushu produces abundant cone-shaped flower panicles up to 20cm long. From late summer through to autumn, the blooms open white to soft cream and hold their colour for around three months, creating a prolonged and reliable floral display. The flowers sit proudly above the foliage, making this variety particularly effective as a feature shrub or in mixed garden beds.
Originally discovered in Kyushu, Japan, by Captain Collingwood Ingram in 1926, this classic hydrangea has remained a favourite worldwide thanks to its beauty, resilience and garden versatility.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in part shade to full sun in well-drained, organically enriched soil. Paniculata hydrangeas tolerate more sun than most hydrangeas, but plants in sunnier positions should be sheltered from drying winds and watered more regularly. Keep roots cool and moist with organic mulch. Prune in winter to around half the plant’s height to encourage strong new growth and abundant flowering, as blooms form on new wood.
