Hydrangea Runaway Bride® is an award-winning hydrangea with a unique flowering habit, producing cascades of crisp white flowers along its graceful, arching stems. Unlike traditional hydrangeas that flower mainly at the ends of their branches, Runaway Bride® develops flowers at each leaf pair, creating a beautiful garland-like display.

Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, with blooms lasting up to four to five months, this compact, rounded shrub provides an extended season of colour. Its dark green foliage complements the white flowers throughout the growing season before developing attractive red tones in autumn.

One of its standout features is that no regular pruning is required. Flowers develop on the previous year's growth, so allowing new shoots to mature naturally helps create an increasingly impressive floral display each year.

Its naturally arching habit makes Runaway Bride® particularly attractive in large pots, hanging baskets, raised planters and garden beds, where the flowering stems can spill gently over the edges.

Runaway Bride® was awarded Plant of the Year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2018, Japan's Flower of the Year for 2019–2020 and Australia's Plant of the Year in 2025.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. In Melbourne gardens, a position with morning sun and protection from hot afternoon sun is ideal, particularly during summer.

Water regularly while establishing and during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Once established, Runaway Bride® has relatively low water requirements, although container-grown plants will need more frequent watering.

Apply an all-purpose fertiliser regularly throughout the active growing season to support healthy growth and flowering. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool.

Avoid pruning wherever possible. Flowers form on the previous year's shoots, including new basal shoots that develop from the base of the plant. Allow these shoots to grow and mature, as they will produce the distinctive garland-like flowering stems the following season.

If pruning is necessary to control the size or shape, keep it minimal, as removing healthy stems may reduce the following year's flowers.

Runaway Bride® is frost hardy and tolerates cold winter temperatures.
