Description
Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant Bird of Paradise or Tree Bird of Paradise, is a striking evergreen plant admired for its large, tropical-looking leaves, upright growth habit and distinctive bird-like flowers.
With its bold, paddle-shaped green foliage and tall, architectural form, Strelitzia nicolai creates an impressive feature in gardens, courtyards and indoor spaces. Its large leaves grow on long, upright stems, giving the plant a lush, palm-like appearance.
Unlike the smaller Strelitzia reginae, this variety can develop into a substantial, multi-stemmed tree over time. Its dramatic foliage makes it particularly popular in tropical and contemporary garden designs, where it provides height, structure and a strong architectural element.
During spring and early summer, mature plants may produce unusual, beak-shaped flowers featuring white and blue petals with deep purple bracts. These distinctive blooms resemble the head of an exotic bird and add further interest to established plants.
Strelitzia nicolai has also become a popular large indoor foliage plant, particularly for bright living spaces with high ceilings. With adequate natural light and appropriate care, it can be grown successfully indoors, although flowering is less common than in outdoor-grown plants.
Once established, outdoor plants can tolerate light frost, but protection from heavier frosts and cold winds is recommended in Melbourne.
Mature size: Outdoors, Strelitzia nicolai can eventually grow into a substantial multi-stemmed tree, potentially reaching 6–10 metres tall or more in favourable conditions. Its spread increases as the plant matures and produces additional stems. Indoor and container-grown plants are generally smaller, with growth influenced by pot size, light and growing conditions.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant outdoors in full sun to part shade, preferably in a warm, sheltered position. Indoors, place in a bright location with plenty of natural light. Avoid dark rooms and prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun through glass.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. For indoor or container growing, use a quality premium potting mix with good drainage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout the warmer growing months. Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, particularly for indoor plants. Reduce watering during winter and avoid waterlogged conditions.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around outdoor plants to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil conditions. Keep mulch clear of the main stems.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during spring and summer to support healthy foliage growth, following the manufacturer's directions.
Pruning & Maintenance: Remove old, damaged or yellowing leaves by cutting them close to the base. Strelitzia nicolai naturally develops a multi-stemmed habit and generally requires little pruning beyond removing unwanted foliage.
Flowering: Mature outdoor plants may produce distinctive white and blue flowers with purple bracts during spring and early summer. Flowering is less common when grown indoors.
Frost Protection: Established plants can tolerate light frost, but young plants and foliage may be damaged by colder conditions. In Melbourne, choose a sheltered position protected from heavy frost and cold winds.
Indoor Growing: Place in a bright room with adequate space for its large leaves and upright growth. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth and wipe dust from the leaves to maintain their appearance.
Container Growing: Suitable for large decorative pots and planters. Choose a sturdy container with adequate drainage and allow room for the plant's developing root system.
Growth & Spacing: Allow generous space for mature outdoor plants. Strelitzia nicolai can become very large and develop a substantial root system, so avoid planting too close to buildings, paving or underground services.
Leaf Care: Large leaves may naturally split as they mature, particularly in windy conditions. This is a normal characteristic of the plant.
