Acer palmatum ‘Okagami’ is a refined, slow-growing Japanese Maple valued for its deep foliage colour and elegant upright form. This small deciduous tree produces rich purplish-red new growth in spring, which deepens to a glossy, almost black-red tone as the leaves mature through summer.
As the season progresses, subtle green undertones may emerge before the tree transforms again in autumn, turning a glowing scarlet red. This dramatic seasonal shift makes Okagami an outstanding specimen tree for smaller gardens where foliage colour is a key feature.
Its compact size and upright habit allow it to work beautifully as a lawn specimen, courtyard tree or feature planting among other cool-climate favourites.
Growing Conditions & Care
Acer ‘Okagami’ prefers cool, deep, moisture-retentive soil in a sheltered position protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds. Provide consistent watering through summer, particularly during hot or dry periods, to maintain healthy foliage.
Mulch annually with organic material such as straw or compost to keep roots cool and retain moisture. Planting near other “cool site” companions like rhododendrons and azaleas can help create the ideal microclimate.
Light pruning can be undertaken in summer to remove any dead or crowded branches, though its natural form requires minimal shaping.
Ideal for
– Smaller gardens
– Lawn or courtyard specimens
– Container growing
– Pairing with rhododendrons and azaleas
– Gardens needing strong foliage contrast
