Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Seiryu’ is a unique and highly sought-after Japanese Maple, known as the only upright-growing cultivar within the Dissectum (laceleaf) group. Unlike most weeping laceleaf maples, Seiryu forms an elegant upright small tree while still displaying the finely divided, delicate foliage that makes dissectum varieties so desirable.
In spring and summer, the finely cut green leaves create a soft, feathery texture that adds movement and lightness to the garden. As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into glowing shades of yellow-gold, orange and crimson, delivering a spectacular seasonal display.
Its upright habit makes Dissectum Seiryu ideal for protected courtyards, small gardens and feature planting where vertical structure is desired without heavy density. It works beautifully in Japanese-inspired landscapes or as a refined focal point among contrasting foliage.
Maple Tree Care
Japanese Maples are beautiful, low-fuss trees that reward gardeners with stunning colour in both spring and autumn. Seiryu prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil and a position sheltered from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds.
Water regularly while young, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Once established, reduce watering frequency, though consistent moisture during hot weather will support best performance. A slow-release fertiliser in early spring can help younger trees establish strong growth, but mature maples typically require minimal feeding. Pruning is rarely necessary; simply remove dead or crowded branches in summer to maintain shape and tree health.
