Alyogyne ‘West Coast Gem’, also known as Native Hibiscus or Swan River Hibiscus, is a fast-growing Australian shrub prized for its vibrant purple flowers and long flowering season. Blooming from spring through to autumn, it produces an abundance of silky, hibiscus-like flowers that bring bold colour and movement to the garden.

This medium-sized shrub naturally develops an open habit, but with regular pruning it forms a dense, rounded shape—making it ideal for screening, informal hedging or feature planting. Its lush foliage and prolific blooms also attract bees and butterflies, supporting a healthy, pollinator-friendly garden.

Hardy and low maintenance, West Coast Gem performs well in a range of climates and is rarely troubled by pests, making it a reliable choice for both home gardens and larger landscapes.

Mature size: approximately 2–2.5 metres high × 1.5–2 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil for best flowering and growth. This variety tolerates a range of soil types but requires good drainage to thrive. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce, as it becomes drought tolerant once mature. It will also tolerate light frost.

Prune after the main spring flowering flush to encourage dense growth and repeat flowering. Regular shaping will help maintain a compact, bushy form. Feed in spring with a native fertiliser or seaweed-based solution, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Ideal for
– Screening and informal hedging
– Feature shrubs in garden beds
