Description

Acacia baileyana ‘Purpurea’, commonly known as Purple Tipped Cootamundra Wattle, is a striking Australian native tree grown for its soft silver-grey foliage and colourful purple new growth. This fast-growing small tree provides year-round interest and is especially valued for its dramatic contrast between the finely divided foliage and vibrant seasonal colour. It makes an excellent feature tree for larger gardens, native landscapes and rural properties.
Throughout the year, the delicate fern-like foliage maintains an attractive silvery-grey appearance, while fresh new growth emerges with distinctive purple tones that create a beautiful contrast across the canopy. During winter and early spring, the tree becomes covered in masses of bright golden-yellow ball-shaped flowers, creating a spectacular display from July through to September. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators, bringing valuable wildlife activity into the garden.
Purple Tipped Cootamundra Wattle is a versatile and hardy tree that adapts to a wide range of garden conditions. Its quick growth and dense canopy make it suitable as a feature specimen, windbreak, shelter tree or screening plant. It also provides excellent cut foliage for floral arrangements. With its combination of colourful foliage, abundant flowers and adaptability, it is a reliable choice for gardeners seeking a tough native tree with strong ornamental appeal.
Mature size: approximately 5–8 metres high × 3–8 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
