Brachychiton rupestris, commonly known as the Queensland Bottle Tree, is one of Australia’s most iconic and sculptural native trees. Known for its distinctive swollen trunk, this hardy species develops its signature “bottle” shape over time, storing water to help it withstand harsh conditions.

Please note: our current stock is young and has not yet developed the pronounced bottle-shaped trunk, which forms gradually over 5–10 years as the tree matures.

With its upright growth and spreading canopy, Bottle Tree makes a striking long-term feature in larger gardens, parks and rural properties. It will drop its leaves prior to flowering, revealing clusters of soft cream to pink flowers in spring and summer, adding seasonal interest.

Highly adaptable and resilient, this species thrives in a wide range of Australian conditions, including heat, drought and light frost once established.

Mature size: approximately 18–20 metres high × 5–12 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Brachychiton rupestris is highly adaptable and will tolerate a wide range of soil types, including poorer soils, but performs best with good drainage.

Water regularly while establishing, then reduce, as it becomes highly drought tolerant once mature. This tree is well suited to hot, dry climates and can also tolerate light frost once established.

Minimal maintenance is required. Ensure adequate space is provided for its eventual size and trunk development.

Ideal for
– Feature planting in large gardens or properties
– Parks and open landscapes
– Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance planting
– Creating a long-term architectural focal point
