Description

Cupressus sempervirens ‘Swanes Gold’, commonly known as Swanes Golden Pencil Pine, is a striking upright evergreen conifer grown for its narrow columnar form and vibrant golden foliage. Originally discovered in Australia as a sport of the traditional green Pencil Pine, this variety has become popular worldwide for adding strong vertical colour and structure to formal and contemporary landscapes.
The foliage maintains a rich golden-yellow tone throughout the year, particularly in full sun where the colour becomes brightest. Its naturally slim upright habit creates clean architectural lines in the garden without taking up much space, making it ideal for narrow planting areas and feature rows. The bright foliage provides strong contrast against darker evergreens, stonework and modern garden materials.
‘Swanes Gold’ is especially effective planted along driveways, pathways and entrances where its tall narrow shape can frame spaces without becoming bulky. It also works beautifully as a pair of feature sentinels beside gates, entrances or formal garden features. Its compact habit makes it suitable for suburban gardens where height is wanted without excessive spread, and it can also be grown successfully in large containers.
Mature size: approximately 5 metres high × 50 centimetres wide in 10 years
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Cupressus ‘Swanes Gold’ in a full sun position for best foliage colour and dense growth.
Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to a range of soil types provided drainage remains good. Avoid consistently wet positions.
Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring if needed to maintain healthy foliage colour and steady growth.
Very little pruning is required due to its naturally narrow upright habit. Light trimming can be done if a tighter form is preferred.
Frost tolerant once established and suitable for a wide range of Australian climates.
Ideal for
– Driveway and pathway planting
– Formal garden design
– Narrow vertical screening
– Entrance and gateway feature planting
– Large pots and container displays
– Contemporary and Mediterranean-style gardens
