Ophiopogon Dwarf Mondo Grass - 7cm Pot

Dwarf Mondo Grass is a compact ornamental groundcover valued for its dense dark green foliage and neat, low-growing habit. Forming soft grass-like clumps, this hardy evergreen plant is widely used between pavers, along pathways and beneath trees where a tidy, low maintenance planting solution is needed. Its rich green colour and fine texture work particularly well in modern gardens, Japanese-style landscapes and shaded courtyard spaces.

The glossy foliage remains attractive year-round, creating a dense carpet-like effect as the plant slowly spreads over time. While subtle in appearance, Dwarf Mondo Grass brings structure and softness to hard landscaping and is especially effective when planted in repetition. In summer, small pale flowers may appear hidden amongst the foliage, occasionally followed by tiny berries.

Growing to only around 10–15cm high, this is one of the lowest growing ornamental grass alternatives available. It is ideal for edging pathways, filling gaps between stepping stones and replacing lawn in lightly trafficked shaded areas where traditional grass struggles. Dwarf Mondo Grass also performs well in pots, window boxes and under established trees where roots can make planting difficult for other groundcovers.

Care & Growing Tips

Plant Dwarf Mondo Grass in part shade to full shade, though it can also handle full sun in cooler climates if moisture is maintained.

Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts well to a range of soil conditions once established.

Water regularly during establishment. Mature plants are relatively hardy but perform best with occasional watering during extended dry periods, particularly in sunnier positions.

Apply a light slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy dense growth.

Very little pruning is required. Remove old or damaged foliage occasionally to refresh the plant if needed.

Suitable for cool to temperate climates and performs especially well in shaded Melbourne gardens.
