Description

Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is a striking evergreen ornamental grass grown for its dramatic deep purple-black foliage. Forming dense clumps of slender grass-like leaves, this low-growing plant creates strong contrast in the garden and works particularly well alongside green foliage, pale stone and modern landscaping materials. Its architectural texture and dark colouring make it a standout choice for borders, pathways and feature planting.
The foliage remains rich and dark throughout the year, becoming almost black in cooler weather and brighter light conditions. During summer, small pale pink to lilac flowers can appear nestled amongst the foliage, sometimes followed by glossy dark berries. While subtle, these seasonal details add extra texture and interest without distracting from the plant’s bold foliage colour.
Black Mondo Grass is widely used as a border plant, groundcover and feature contrast planting in contemporary, Japanese-style and shaded gardens. Its compact clumping habit makes it ideal between pavers, along pathways, beneath trees and in containers where the dark foliage can be appreciated up close. Once established, it is hardy and adaptable, tolerating frost, wind and a range of soil conditions provided drainage is good.
Mature size: approximately 25 centimetres high × 25 centimetres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Black Mondo Grass in full sun to part shade. In warmer climates, part shade will help maintain healthy foliage and soil moisture.
Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to sandy, loamy and clay-based soils. For container planting, use a quality premium potting mix.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain moderate moisture during extended dry periods for best growth and foliage appearance.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser annually in spring to encourage healthy dense growth.
Very little pruning is required. Remove any old or damaged foliage as needed to refresh the clumps.
Frost tolerant and suitable for a range of temperate Australian climates once established.
Ideal for

– Japanese-style and modern gardens
