Description

Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Tall Mondo Grass, is a hardy evergreen groundcover valued for its lush grass-like foliage and ability to thrive in shaded garden spaces. Forming dense clumps of arching green leaves, it is widely used for edging pathways, underplanting trees and creating low maintenance borders with a neat, structured appearance.
Through mid to late summer, Tall Mondo Grass produces small white to pale lilac flowers hidden amongst the foliage, followed by decorative dark blue to navy berries. While subtle, these seasonal details add extra texture and interest to shaded garden areas. The rich green foliage remains attractive year-round and gradually spreads to form a dense carpet over time.
Tall Mondo Grass is particularly useful in areas where traditional lawn struggles, especially beneath established trees or in deep shade. Its tidy growth habit makes it ideal for dividing pathways, softening hard landscaping and filling difficult planting spaces. It also performs well in pots, courtyard gardens and Japanese-style landscapes where texture and simplicity are key features. Once established, it is very hardy and adaptable to a range of soil conditions and climates.
Mature size: approximately 25 centimetres high × 50 centimetres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Ophiopogon japonicus in deep shade to semi-sun positions. It performs especially well in shaded or protected areas where many other groundcovers struggle.
Prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts to sandy, loamy and clay-based soils once established.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain soil moisture during extended dry periods, particularly in sunnier locations.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser annually in spring to encourage healthy dense growth.
Very little maintenance is required. Remove old or damaged foliage occasionally to refresh the plant if needed.
Frost and wind tolerant once established and suitable for a wide range of Australian garden conditions.
Ideal for
– Shaded groundcover planting
– Path and garden edging
– Underplanting beneath trees
– Japanese-style and courtyard gardens
– Pots and container planting
– Low maintenance lawn alternatives
