Philotheca buxifolia ‘Cascade of Stars’, commonly known as Wax Flower, is a charming Australian native shrub prized for its masses of star-shaped white flowers and naturally cascading growth habit. Compact, hardy and easy to grow, this attractive evergreen plant is ideal for pots, garden borders and elevated planting positions where its graceful form can spill naturally over walls and garden edges.

In early spring, the shrub becomes covered in soft pink buds that gradually open into a profusion of delicate white star-shaped flowers. The floral display creates a beautiful contrast against the aromatic light green foliage and attracts bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators to the garden. Even when not in flower, the dense foliage provides year-round colour and texture, making it an attractive addition to the landscape.

‘Cascade of Stars’ is particularly useful in smaller gardens, courtyards and container displays where its compact size and cascading habit can be fully appreciated. It performs beautifully in rockeries, raised garden beds and retaining walls, while also working well as a mass-planted groundcover effect. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance, making it a reliable choice for gardeners seeking long-lasting colour without constant attention.

Mature size: approximately 0.5 metres high × 0.5 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Philotheca ‘Cascade of Stars’ in a full sun to light shade position for best flowering and healthy growth.

Prefers well-drained soil and performs well in sandy, loamy and premium potting mix blends. Good drainage is essential for long-term success.

Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it will tolerate short dry periods, although occasional watering during extended drought will maintain healthy growth.

Apply a light application of a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser in spring if required.

Pruning is generally minimal. A light trim after flowering can help maintain a compact shape and encourage dense growth.

Mulch around the base to suppress weeds, improve soil quality and help maintain cool, even soil moisture. Avoid disturbing the root system where possible.

Tolerates light frost and performs well in cool temperate, warm temperate and coastal gardens.
