Pinus parviflora ‘Hagoromo’ is an exceptionally compact form of the Japanese White Pine, prized for its dense blue-green foliage and naturally sculptural habit. Slow growing and highly refined in appearance, this miniature evergreen conifer is ideal for rockeries, Japanese-style gardens and container planting where subtle texture and year-round structure are important.

The short blue-green needles form dense clusters along the branches, giving the plant a soft layered appearance that becomes increasingly character-filled with age. Despite its very small size, ‘Hagoromo’ often produces decorative cones from a young age, adding further ornamental interest and enhancing its mature, bonsai-like appearance.

This dwarf Japanese White Pine is especially suited to smaller garden spaces where a slow-growing evergreen feature is needed without overwhelming surrounding planting. It works beautifully amongst rocks, gravel and mosses, and is highly valued in Japanese-inspired landscapes for its compact form and calm architectural presence. Its naturally slow growth also makes it an excellent long-term choice for pots, troughs and collector gardens.

Mature size: approximately 30 centimetres high × 30 centimetres wide in 10 years

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Pinus parviflora ‘Hagoromo’ in a full sun to lightly shaded position for best foliage density and colour.

Requires very well-drained soil and performs best in sandy, gravelly or free-draining loam conditions. Avoid wet or poorly drained areas.

Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during extended dry periods.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for conifers in spring if needed to support healthy growth.

Very little pruning is required due to its naturally compact habit. Light shaping can be carried out if desired.

Suitable for cool to temperate climates and tolerant of frost once established.

Ideal for
– Japanese-style gardens
