Description

Pinus koraiensis ‘Dragon’s Eye’ is a distinctive ornamental conifer grown for its unusual banded needles and graceful layered form. A selected cultivar of the Korean Pine, this evergreen tree develops striking yellow variegation across the foliage during winter, creating the appearance of glowing “dragon eyes” throughout the canopy. Its soft needles and slightly weeping growth habit give the tree an elegant, textured appearance year-round.
The long blue-green needles grow in soft radiating clusters before gently twisting downward from the branches, creating movement and a relaxed cascading effect. As temperatures cool, the yellow banding becomes more pronounced, transforming the foliage into a dramatic winter feature. The tree maintains its ornamental appeal throughout the seasons, with dense branching often extending close to ground level as it matures.
‘Dragon’s Eye’ forms a broadly conical shape over time and works beautifully as a specimen tree in larger gardens, conifer collections and Japanese-inspired landscapes. Its slower growth rate also makes it suitable for growing in large pots and containers for many years, particularly in courtyards and collector gardens where its unique foliage can be appreciated up close. The soft texture and unusual colouring pair well with maples, rocks and structured evergreen planting.
Mature size: approximately 6 metres high × 3–4 metres wide over time
