Acer palmatum ‘Aka Kawa Hime’ is a compact, semi-dwarf Japanese Maple admired for its vibrant stems, soft foliage tones and outstanding autumn colour. A smaller-growing form related to the popular coral bark maple (Sango Kaku), this variety brings multi-season interest in a more manageable size, making it ideal for smaller gardens and container planting.

In spring and summer, Aka Kawa Hime produces yellow-green foliage highlighted by bright red shoots and leaf stalks, creating striking contrast throughout the canopy. As autumn arrives, the tree transforms into brilliant shades of yellow, gold and red, delivering a dramatic seasonal finale.

Its naturally compact habit makes it an excellent specimen tree for garden beds, courtyards or large pots, where its colourful stems and foliage can be appreciated up close.

Maple Tree Care
Japanese Maples are beautiful, low-maintenance trees that reward gardeners with exceptional spring and autumn colour. They prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil and a position sheltered from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds.

Water regularly while young, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Once established, watering can be reduced, though consistent moisture during hot periods will support best performance. A slow-release fertiliser in early spring can help young trees establish, but mature maples generally require minimal feeding.
