Acer palmatum ‘Emperor I’ is a striking upright Japanese Maple known for its rich red foliage and strong seasonal colour. Forming a broad, upright crown, this variety produces delicate, deeply lobed leaves that emerge a deep red in spring and mature into an intense crimson display in autumn.
Its bold colour makes Emperor I an excellent feature tree for smaller gardens, where it provides contrast against green plantings and layered garden beds. The upright habit and refined leaf structure give it a graceful presence without overwhelming the space, making it ideal for specimen planting or as a focal point in courtyard gardens.
Maple Tree Care
Japanese Maples are beautiful, relatively low-fuss trees that reward gardeners with exceptional colour in both spring and autumn. Japanese Maple's prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil and a position sheltered from harsh afternoon sun and strong drying winds.
Water regularly while young, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Once established, watering can be reduced, though consistent moisture during hot weather will support healthy growth. A slow-release fertiliser in early spring can assist younger trees in establishing, but mature maples rarely require heavy feeding. Pruning is minimal — a light summer tidy-up of dead or crowded branches will maintain its natural shape and keep the tree healthy.
