Description
Banksia ericifolia ‘Red Rover’ is a striking Australian native shrub known for its large, deep red to terracotta flower spikes and fine, heath-like foliage. Its cylindrical flowers can reach up to 25cm long, creating an impressive display of colour against the plant's soft, pale green leaves.
With its naturally open, spreading growth habit, ‘Red Rover’ brings colour, texture and structure to native gardens. The distinctive flowers are highly attractive to nectar-feeding birds and bees, making it an excellent choice for encouraging wildlife into the garden.
As the flowers mature, they develop into decorative woody seed cones that provide additional interest throughout the year.
Growing to approximately 2 metres high and wide, ‘Red Rover’ is particularly useful for informal screening, mixed native borders and feature planting. Its tolerance of coastal conditions, frost and dry periods once established makes it a versatile choice for Melbourne gardens.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high × 2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil with a neutral to acidic pH. A sunny position will encourage strong growth and flowering.
Good drainage is particularly important during Melbourne's wetter winter months. Avoid planting in areas where water regularly collects.
Water regularly during establishment to encourage a healthy root system. Once established, ‘Red Rover’ is drought tolerant, although occasional deep watering during extended dry periods will help maintain healthy growth.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants in spring. Choose a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for banksias.
This hardy variety tolerates frost, heat, humidity and coastal conditions, including salt exposure.
Light pruning after flowering can help maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid cutting heavily into old, leafless wood.
