Description
Acacia maxwellii is a distinctive Australian native groundcover with attractive silvery-blue foliage and a naturally low, spreading growth habit. Its fine-textured foliage creates a soft, flowing appearance, making it an excellent choice for adding contrast and texture to garden beds.
This compact, prostrate shrub forms a broad, umbrella-like canopy that spreads across the ground. Golden-yellow flowers provide additional seasonal interest, standing out beautifully against the silvery foliage.
Hardy and adaptable, Acacia maxwellii is particularly well suited to sunny, exposed positions where other plants may struggle. Its tolerance of heat, drought and coastal conditions makes it a practical choice for low-maintenance Australian gardens.
With its spreading habit and compact height, it works well in rockeries, along garden edges and across open garden beds, particularly when planted amongst contrasting green foliage.
Mature size: approximately 30cm high × 1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun for the best growth and foliage colour. Acacia maxwellii is adaptable to a wide range of soil types but will perform best where drainage is adequate.
Water regularly during establishment to encourage a strong root system. Once established, this hardy Australian native is drought and heat tolerant, making it suitable for gardens with lower watering requirements.
It also tolerates coastal conditions, including exposed sites where salt-laden winds can be a challenge.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Australian native plants if required, avoiding products high in phosphorus.
Generally low maintenance, Acacia maxwellii requires little pruning. Light trimming can be carried out as needed to maintain its shape and encourage a neat, compact appearance.
