Acer palmatum ‘Chishio’ is a striking Japanese Maple grown for its vivid spring foliage and compact, graceful form. One of the older Japanese maple cultivars, ‘Chishio’ is especially valued for its bright coral-red new growth, which brings strong seasonal colour to shaded gardens, courtyards and feature plantings. Its smaller size and fine branching habit also make it popular for bonsai and container growing.

The foliage colour changes beautifully through the seasons. In spring, fresh leaves emerge in brilliant shades of bright red to pink-red before gradually softening to bronze-green and olive-green through summer. As temperatures cool in autumn, the tree puts on another display with tones of orange, gold and red. Even when bare in winter, the elegant branching structure adds interest to the garden.

‘Chishio’ is well suited to smaller gardens where a compact ornamental tree is needed without overwhelming the space. It works particularly well as a feature tree near patios, entrances or lawns where the seasonal foliage colour can be appreciated up close. This Japanese Maple pairs naturally with shade-loving plants including azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. It also performs very well in large pots and containers, making it a practical option for courtyards and balcony gardens.

Care & Growing Tips

Plant Acer palmatum ‘Chishio’ in a sheltered position with morning sun or filtered light. Protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds will help maintain healthy foliage, particularly during summer.

Prefers cool, deep, moisture-retentive soil with good drainage. Adding organic matter and mulch around the root zone will help regulate soil moisture and temperature.

Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing and during warmer weather. Container-grown plants will require more consistent watering.

Feed in early spring with a slow-release fertiliser suitable for deciduous trees or Japanese maples. Avoid excessive fertilising, which can encourage soft growth.

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead or crossing branches during winter dormancy.

Best suited to temperate climates and appreciates some protection from extreme summer heat.
