In spring, fresh chartreuse foliage emerges with a soft yellow-green glow before deepening through summer. As the weather cools, the leaves shift into warm shades of orange and gold, creating a strong autumn display. Once the leaves fall, the vivid golden-yellow stems become the feature through winter, adding brightness and structure to the garden during the colder months when many plants fade into the background.

‘Bihou’ has a naturally upright, graceful growth habit that suits Japanese-style gardens, mixed borders and feature planting near patios or entrances. Its compact size also makes it well suited to pots and container growing, particularly in sheltered courtyards or smaller gardens where space is limited. Like many Japanese maples, it pairs beautifully with azaleas, camellias and other shade-tolerant plants.

Mature size: approximately 2 metres high × 2 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Bihou’ in a position with morning sun or part shade, especially in warmer Australian climates where protection from hot afternoon sun and drying winds will help prevent leaf scorch.

Prefers well-drained, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Mulching around the base helps maintain cool root conditions and retain moisture.

Water regularly during establishment and throughout extended dry periods, particularly during summer. Container-grown specimens may require more frequent watering.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins. Avoid heavy feeding, which can encourage soft growth vulnerable to heat stress.

Minimal pruning is needed beyond light shaping or removal of dead branches during winter dormancy.

Suitable for cool to temperate climates and benefits from a sheltered position away from harsh summer heat.
