Description

Acer palmatum ‘Kuro Hime’ is a compact dwarf Japanese Maple prized for its dense growth habit and exceptional seasonal colour. This refined ornamental tree produces finely divided, palm-shaped foliage that changes dramatically throughout the year, making it a standout feature in small gardens, courtyards and container displays. Its naturally compact form and intricate branching structure make it especially appealing for gardeners seeking a Japanese Maple that remains manageable without sacrificing visual impact.
In spring, fresh new foliage emerges in beautiful shades of orange and soft pink, creating a colourful display across the dense canopy. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to rich green while developing attractive ruby-red margins that remain prominent through summer. Autumn brings another spectacular transformation as the foliage turns vibrant shades of crimson and red, delivering a striking seasonal finale before leaf fall.
‘Kuro Hime’ naturally develops a compact, rounded habit with dense branching, making it ideal for smaller gardens and feature planting. Its manageable size also makes it well suited to growing in decorative pots and containers. The changing foliage colours provide year-round interest, while the compact structure allows it to fit comfortably into Japanese-style gardens, woodland settings and mixed ornamental plantings.
Mature size: approximately 1–1.5 metres high × 1–1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Kuro Hime’ in a sheltered position with morning sun or filtered light. Protection from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds will help maintain foliage quality and colour.
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. Consistent moisture is important, particularly during warmer months.
Water regularly during establishment and during extended dry periods. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Apply a complete organic fertiliser when planting and annually in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
Mulch around the base to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil structure.
Prune during winter dormancy to remove dead or damaged branches and lightly shape the tree if required. Lower limbs can also be selectively removed to highlight the branching structure.
