Acer palmatum, commonly known as the Japanese Maple, is one of the world's most admired ornamental trees, valued for its graceful form, delicate foliage and spectacular seasonal colour. With its elegant branching structure and ever-changing appearance through the seasons, this deciduous tree brings beauty and refinement to gardens large and small. It is equally at home as a feature tree in the landscape, a specimen in a decorative container or as a treasured bonsai.

Fresh new growth emerges in spring with soft vibrant foliage that creates a striking contrast against the fine branching framework. Through summer, the canopy develops into a lush display of finely textured leaves that provide movement and softness in the garden. Autumn is when Japanese Maples truly shine, with foliage transforming into brilliant shades of red, orange, gold and crimson, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Even in winter, the graceful branching habit provides architectural interest after leaf fall.

Japanese Maples naturally develop a balanced, elegant shape with age and require very little intervention to maintain their beauty. Their manageable size makes them ideal for courtyards, small gardens, woodland settings and container growing. They are also highly prized by bonsai enthusiasts due to their fine branching, attractive foliage and ability to develop character over time.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Japanese Maples in a cool, sheltered position with morning sun or filtered light. Protection from harsh afternoon sun will help prevent leaf scorch, particularly in warmer climates.

Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid waterlogged positions but maintain consistent soil moisture.

Water regularly during establishment and throughout extended dry periods, especially during summer.

Apply a complete slow-release fertiliser in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

Mulch around the base with organic material to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and improve soil health.

Pruning is rarely required. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during winter dormancy if needed.

Highly frost tolerant once established and well suited to cool and temperate Australian gardens.
