Acer palmatum ‘Senkaki’, commonly known as the Coral Bark Maple, is a striking Japanese Maple prized for its vivid coral-red stems that glow through winter. This unique bark colour provides exceptional year-round interest, especially in cooler months when the branches are fully exposed.

In spring, Senkaki produces soft green, palmate leaves that create a fresh, delicate canopy. As the seasons progress, the foliage transitions into warm yellow-gold tones in autumn, offering a beautiful contrast against the vibrant red bark. This combination of colourful stems and seasonal foliage makes it a standout feature tree in any garden.

With its elegant upright form and graceful branching, Senkaki is ideal as a specimen tree, where its structure and colour can be fully appreciated. It also works beautifully within mixed borders, adding height, texture and seasonal contrast.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. In warmer climates, protect from harsh afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch and damage to the bark. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce, though consistent moisture will improve overall performance. Apply mulch annually in spring to retain moisture and protect roots. Light pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to improve shape and airflow, avoiding heavy cuts on mature trees. Monitor for pests such as aphids or scale and treat if required.

Mature size: approximately 6 metres high × 5 metres wide
