Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ is one of the most distinctive Japanese Maples available. Valued for its dense upright habit and uniquely crinkled foliage, this compact ornamental tree offers year-round character and exceptional autumn colour. Its slow growth and naturally sculptural form make it a favourite for smaller gardens, courtyards, Japanese-style landscapes and container growing.

The rich green leaves are tightly clustered along the branches, creating a dense textured appearance unlike any other Japanese Maple. Each leaf has a distinctive crinkled and curled form that gives the tree its distinctive appearance. Throughout summer, the foliage remains lush and attractive before transforming into brilliant shades of gold, orange and yellow in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal display.

‘Shishigashira’ naturally develops a compact upright habit, making it ideal for gardeners seeking vertical interest without excessive width. Its dense branching structure provides architectural appeal even during winter dormancy. This variety is particularly effective as a feature tree, in Japanese-inspired gardens, or grown in large containers where its unique foliage can be appreciated up close.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ in a sheltered position with filtered light or gentle morning sun. Protection from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds will help maintain healthy foliage.

Prefers cool, deep, moisture-retentive soil enriched with organic matter. Slightly acidic soil conditions are ideal.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during summer and prolonged dry periods.

Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for Japanese maples in early spring as new growth begins.

Mulch around the root zone with organic material such as compost, bark or straw to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning is rarely required due to its naturally compact habit. Remove dead or damaged branches during winter dormancy if necessary.

Suitable for cool to temperate climates and highly frost tolerant once established.
