Description

Berzelia ‘Buttonbush Lime’ is a distinctive evergreen shrub grown for its unique spherical flower heads and fine, textured foliage. Throughout summer and autumn, the large button-like flower heads emerge in vibrant lime green before gradually softening to creamy white, creating a striking display in the garden. Highly prized by florists for its long-lasting stems, this elegant South African shrub is equally at home in ornamental gardens, Mediterranean-style landscapes and premium cut flower gardens throughout Melbourne and south-east Victoria.
The rounded flower heads provide outstanding texture and contrast, while the fine evergreen foliage adds year-round interest. As the flowers mature, the changing colours create a beautiful seasonal display that complements both native and exotic plantings. Its naturally rounded growth habit makes it an excellent feature shrub, while the long-lasting flowers are ideal for fresh and dried floral arrangements.
Tough and drought tolerant once established, ‘Buttonbush Lime’ performs best in sunny, free-draining positions where its unusual flowers can be fully appreciated.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high × 2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a full sun position, although light afternoon shade is tolerated. Good air circulation will encourage healthy growth and reliable flowering.
Prefers free-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Excellent drainage is essential, particularly in Melbourne's heavier clay soils. Improve drainage by planting into a raised garden bed or mound, or incorporate coarse sand where necessary.
Water regularly during establishment, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Once established, the plant is reasonably drought tolerant and generally only requires occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Feed sparingly in late winter or early spring using a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for Proteaceae or other phosphorus-sensitive plants. Seaweed solutions or low-analysis fertilisers are also suitable. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers and excessive feeding.
Apply a layer of pine bark, wood chips or organic mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the root zone cool, ensuring mulch is kept clear of the stem.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems, but avoid hard pruning into old wood.
Light frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne's temperate climate, provided drainage is excellent.
