Description
Boronia ‘Sirius’ (B. heterophylla ‘Moonglow’ × B. pulchella) is a compact Australian native shrub producing masses of white, star-shaped flowers from late winter to early spring. Its delicate blooms and slender, aromatic foliage make it an attractive addition to gardens and outdoor pots.
Bred and developed by Kings Park & Botanic Garden in Western Australia, ‘Sirius’ combines a naturally compact growth habit with beautiful seasonal flowering.
The fine, fragrant foliage provides year-round interest, while the abundance of white flowers brings a fresh, delicate appearance to the garden as winter gives way to spring.
Growing approximately 1 metre high and wide, this evergreen shrub is particularly well suited to smaller gardens, mixed borders and decorative containers. It can also be planted in groups to create a lovely seasonal display.
Mature size: approximately 1 metre high × 1 metre wide
Flowering: Late winter to early spring
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
Boronia prefers consistent moisture without waterlogging. Water regularly during establishment and provide supplementary watering during hot, dry periods, particularly through Melbourne's warmer months.
Apply a layer of mulch around the base to help retain soil moisture and keep the roots cool, ensuring mulch is kept clear of the main stems.
Lightly prune after flowering to encourage compact, bushy growth and maintain a neat shape. Avoid cutting heavily into older woody stems.
‘Sirius’ tolerates moderate frost, making it suitable for many Melbourne gardens. A sheltered position away from harsh, drying winds is beneficial, particularly during summer.
When growing in pots, use a quality, free-draining potting mix suitable for Australian native plants. Monitor moisture levels carefully, as container-grown plants can dry out more quickly during warm weather.
