Description
Rose ‘Sally Holmes’ is a beautiful, free-flowering shrub rose producing large clusters of soft white, single flowers with delicate pink tinges and prominent golden stamens. The blooms open in generous trusses, creating an abundant display against the plant's glossy, dark green foliage.
With its vigorous growth and naturally dense, bushy habit, ‘Sally Holmes’ makes an excellent feature shrub for larger garden beds and mixed borders. Its graceful flowering stems give it a relaxed, informal appearance that works particularly well in cottage-style gardens.
One of the world's most admired shrub roses, ‘Sally Holmes’ was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Rose Hall of Fame in 2012, recognising its outstanding garden qualities and enduring popularity.
Although typically grown as a large shrub, its vigorous, arching stems can also be trained as a climber in suitable gardens, making it a versatile choice for adding height and seasonal colour.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high when grown as a shrub.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.
Water thoroughly after planting and regularly while establishing, particularly during extended periods of hot, dry weather. Apply mulch in spring to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the base of the plant.
Feed established roses in late August and again after the main flowering flushes to encourage healthy growth and continued flowering.
Prune in July, or August in colder and frost-prone areas, removing dead, damaged or crossing branches. As a shrub rose, ‘Sally Holmes’ benefits from selective pruning to maintain its natural shape rather than heavy cutting back.
Remove spent flower clusters as required to encourage further blooms. Maintain good airflow around the plant and remove fallen leaves to help reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
If training as a climber, provide a sturdy support and tie in the longer stems as they develop.
