Description
Bush Rose ‘Shirley’s Rose’ is a beautiful Australian-bred rose admired for its large, richly coloured flowers, pleasant fragrance and good disease resistance. Bred by Bruce Brundrett, this attractive variety combines changing flower colours with healthy foliage and relatively straightforward care.
The large blooms display a beautiful blend of deep copper and rich salmon tones, with colours shifting as the flowers mature and throughout the changing seasons. This variation creates an interesting display, with different shades often appearing across the plant.
Along with its distinctive colouring, ‘Shirley’s Rose’ produces a pleasing fragrance that adds to its appeal in garden beds and borders.
Its excellent foliage and good disease resistance make it a practical choice for gardeners wanting a beautiful flowering rose without demanding maintenance. While regular watering, feeding and seasonal pruning will encourage the best results, this variety is particularly appealing to gardeners with limited time.
With its warm flower colours and classic bush rose habit, ‘Shirley’s Rose’ works beautifully in mixed borders, traditional rose gardens and alongside complementary flowering perennials.
Mature size: Height and width depend on growing conditions and pruning. Specific mature dimensions have not been provided.
Care & Growing Tips
Position: Plant in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Avoid poorly drained positions.
Watering: Water deeply and regularly during establishment. Once established, provide additional water during extended dry periods, particularly through Melbourne's hot summers.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature and reduce weeds. Keep mulch clear of the main stems.
Fertilising: Feed established roses with a quality rose fertiliser from late August in Melbourne, followed by additional feeding during the growing season according to product directions.
Pruning: Prune during winter, generally in July for Melbourne gardens. Remove dead, damaged and crossing branches, then shorten healthy stems to encourage strong new growth and maintain an open, balanced shape.
Flowering Care: Remove spent flowers throughout the growing season to encourage further blooms and maintain a tidy appearance.
Plant Health: Although ‘Shirley’s Rose’ has good disease resistance, allow adequate airflow around the plant and water at soil level where possible to help minimise fungal problems.
