Description
Camellia japonica ‘Black Tie’ is an elegant evergreen shrub prized for its rich deep red flowers and dense, upright growth habit. Producing perfectly formed formal double blooms, this classic camellia brings colour, structure and sophistication to the garden during the cooler months. Its dark flowers contrast beautifully against glossy green foliage, making it a standout feature in both traditional and contemporary landscapes.
Flowering through the mid-season camellia period, ‘Black Tie’ produces an abundance of medium-sized blooms in a rich velvety red. The formal double flowers are neatly layered, creating a refined and symmetrical appearance that has made this variety a favourite among camellia enthusiasts. The lustrous dark green foliage remains attractive throughout the year, providing a handsome evergreen backdrop even when the plant is not in flower.
With its naturally bushy and upright habit, ‘Black Tie’ is well suited to feature planting, flowering hedges, screening and large containers. It performs beautifully in courtyards, woodland gardens and mixed shrub borders where its winter and spring flowering can be fully appreciated. The dense foliage also makes it useful for adding year-round structure and privacy to the garden.
Mature size: approximately 2.5 metres high × 2 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Camellia japonica ‘Black Tie’ in a position with morning sun and afternoon shade, or filtered light throughout the day. Protection from strong winds will help preserve flowers and foliage.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging the soil.
Apply a quality fertiliser suitable for camellias and flowering shrubs in spring after flowering and again in mid to late summer if required.
Mulch with approximately 5cm of quality organic mulch to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth.
Light frost tolerant once established and well suited to cool and temperate Australian gardens.
