Description
Camellia japonica ‘Debbie’ is a long-standing favourite among camellia lovers, valued for its large rosy-pink flowers, vigorous growth and reliable garden performance. This evergreen flowering shrub combines beautiful winter colour with a strong upright habit, making it an excellent choice for hedging, screening and feature planting. Its hybrid heritage also gives it greater sun tolerance than many traditional Japonica varieties, increasing its versatility in the garden.
From winter through to early spring, ‘Debbie’ produces an abundance of large, bright rosy-pink blooms that stand out beautifully against the glossy dark green foliage. The generous flowering display provides valuable colour during the cooler months when many other garden plants are dormant. The evergreen foliage remains attractive year-round, adding structure, privacy and a lush backdrop to the garden.
‘Debbie’ develops a strong upright habit with dense branching, making it particularly useful as a flowering hedge or informal screen. It can also be grown as a feature shrub in garden beds or large containers. Its toughness, adaptability and reliable flowering have made it one of the most popular camellias for Australian gardens.
Mature size: approximately 3–4 metres high × 2–3 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Camellia japonica ‘Debbie’ in full sun to part shade. While it is more sun tolerant than many camellias, it performs best with some protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during dry periods. Avoid overwatering or allowing the soil to become waterlogged.
Apply a quality fertiliser suitable for camellias and flowering shrubs in spring after flowering and again in mid to late summer if required.
Mulch with around 5cm of quality organic mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, encourage dense growth and keep hedges tidy.
Frost tolerant once established and well suited to cool and temperate Australian climates.
Ideal for
– Flowering hedges and screens
– Feature shrub planting
– Evergreen privacy planting
– Woodland and shade gardens
– Pots and large containers
– Winter and early spring colour displays
