Camellia japonica ‘Peacock’, also known by its Japanese name Kakukan Kajaku, is a unique and elegant camellia admired for its unusual flowers and graceful weeping habit. Unlike traditional camellias, this distinctive variety produces charming tubular blooms delicately spotted with white, creating an eye-catching display throughout winter and spring. Its cascading form makes it a beautiful specimen for feature planting, containers and sheltered garden settings.

Flowering through the mid to late camellia season, ‘Peacock’ produces medium-sized tubular flowers in rich pinkish-red tones, attractively speckled with white. The unusual bloom shape adds interest and texture, while the glossy dark green evergreen foliage provides year-round structure and contrast. Its naturally dense, weeping habit creates a soft, elegant appearance that sets it apart from more upright camellia varieties.

This beautiful cultivar is particularly well suited to decorative pots, courtyards and feature planting where its distinctive flowers and graceful form can be fully appreciated. It also performs well in woodland-style gardens beneath the filtered canopy of larger trees.

Mature size: approximately 2–3 metres high × 2–2.5 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a part shade position or where it receives morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne, a sheltered location protected from strong winds will encourage the best flowering display.

Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost before planting or consider planting in a raised garden bed.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during Melbourne's dry summers. Once established, a deep weekly watering during the growing season is usually sufficient.

Feed with a quality fertiliser formulated for camellias or other acid-loving plants in spring after flowering. Avoid products containing lime.

Apply a generous layer of organic mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if required. Older plants respond well to rejuvenation pruning.

An excellent choice for long-term container growing when planted in a premium-quality potting mix and watered consistently.
