Camellia japonica ‘Shiro Chan’ is a graceful evergreen shrub admired for its elegant white anemone-form flowers and lush glossy foliage. Flowering from early winter through to mid spring, this beautiful Japanese variety produces large, showy blooms that brighten shaded areas of the garden. Its naturally bushy growth habit and reliable flowering make it an excellent choice for feature planting, hedging and large containers.

The striking flowers are pure white with an incomplete double anemone form, creating a soft, layered appearance that contrasts beautifully against the thick, glossy dark green foliage. Flowering over an extended period, 'Shiro Chan' provides valuable winter colour while its evergreen leaves maintain structure and interest throughout the year.

With its dense, vigorous growth, 'Shiro Chan' is ideal as a specimen shrub, informal hedge or woodland planting. It also performs exceptionally well in decorative pots where its elegant flowers can be appreciated up close.

Mature size: approximately 2.5–4 metres high × 2–3 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a position with morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne, a sheltered part-shade position protected from drying winds will encourage the best flowering display. It also performs well beneath the canopy of established trees where it receives filtered light.

Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost before planting or consider a raised garden bed.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during Melbourne's dry summers. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during hot weather.

Feed in spring after flowering with a quality fertiliser formulated for camellias or other acid-loving plants. Avoid applying lime, as camellias perform best in acidic soils.

Apply a generous layer of compost, leaf mould or other organic mulch each spring to help retain moisture, suppress weeds and keep the roots cool. Keep mulch clear of the trunk.

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Older plants can be rejuvenated with heavier pruning if required.

Frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne and other cool to temperate Australian climates.
