Description

Camellia japonica ‘Tama Vino’ is a sophisticated evergreen shrub prized for its rich wine-red flowers and elegant upright growth. Flowering from early to mid winter, this beautiful Japanese cultivar produces striking peony to rose-form double blooms, each highlighted by a delicate white edge that makes the flowers truly stand out. Its glossy dark green foliage provides year-round structure, making it a wonderful addition to both traditional and contemporary gardens.
The large blooms are a deep burgundy to wine-red, with beautifully layered petals creating a full, elegant appearance. A fine white margin around each flower adds extra contrast and highlights the unique colouring. Flowering through the cooler months, 'Tama Vino' provides valuable winter colour when much of the garden is dormant, while its evergreen foliage remains attractive throughout the year.
With its medium-sized upright habit, 'Tama Vino' is ideal as a feature shrub, informal hedge or specimen plant. It also performs exceptionally well in large pots, bringing colour and structure to courtyards, patios and entrances.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in a part shade position or where it receives morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne, a sheltered location protected from strong winds will encourage the best flowering display.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. If planting into Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost or plant into a raised garden bed.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during Melbourne's dry summers. Once established, a deep weekly watering during the growing season is generally sufficient.
Feed with a quality fertiliser formulated for camellias or other acid-loving plants in spring after flowering. A second light application in mid to late summer will encourage healthy growth and flower bud development.
Apply a generous layer of organic mulch each spring to help conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Older plants respond well to rejuvenation pruning if required.
Well suited to long-term container growing when planted in a premium-quality potting mix and watered consistently.
