Camellia japonica ‘Lady Loch’ is a long-standing Australian favourite, valued for its vigorous growth, long flowering season and beautiful bicolour blooms. This dependable evergreen shrub combines outstanding garden performance with elegant flowers, making it an excellent choice for feature planting, hedging and screening. Its glossy dark green foliage provides year-round structure, while the striking flowers brighten the garden through the cooler months.

From winter into spring, ‘Lady Loch’ produces an abundance of large bicolour blooms that stand out beautifully against the deep green foliage. The elegant flowers create a spectacular display over an extended flowering season, bringing colour and interest when many other plants are dormant. Its dense, bushy habit ensures it remains attractive throughout the year, even when not in flower.

With its naturally vigorous and robust growth, ‘Lady Loch’ is ideal for creating flowering hedges, privacy screens or feature shrubs. It is equally at home in larger garden beds or grown as a specimen in a spacious container.

Mature size: approximately 3–4 metres high × 2–3 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade. In Melbourne, a position with morning sun and protection from harsh afternoon sun will encourage the best flowering display while helping protect the foliage during summer.

Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. In Melbourne's heavier clay soils, improve drainage with compost or plant into a raised garden bed.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture during prolonged dry periods. Once established, deep watering through Melbourne's dry summers will keep plants healthy and flowering well.

Feed in spring after flowering with a quality fertiliser formulated for camellias or other acid-loving plants. A second application in mid to late summer will support healthy growth and next season's flower buds.

Apply around 5cm of quality organic mulch each spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve soil health, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape or create a dense hedge. Avoid pruning later in the season, as this may remove developing flower buds.

Frost tolerant once established and well suited to Melbourne and other cool to temperate Australian climates.
