Description

Chamelaucium ‘Local Hero’ is a stunning Australian native Geraldton Wax grown for its masses of glossy red buds, prolific pink flowers and graceful rounded habit. This fast-growing shrub delivers an exceptional display from late winter into spring, making it a standout feature in native gardens, mixed borders and informal hedging.
As the flowering season approaches, the shrub becomes covered in deep red buds that create colour well before the flowers open. In mid spring, these buds burst into masses of soft pink blooms that blanket the plant for an extended period. The flowers are beautifully complemented by fine fresh green foliage, creating a vibrant display that attracts bees and other pollinators. Like many Geraldton Wax varieties, the blooms are also highly valued as long-lasting cut flowers.
‘Local Hero’ forms a dense rounded shrub that works equally well as a feature plant, informal screen or flowering hedge. Its fast growth, drought tolerance and adaptability make it an excellent choice for Australian gardens, particularly in sunny positions where flowering is at its best. The soft foliage and long flowering period provide year-round garden interest while requiring relatively little maintenance once established.
Mature size: approximately 2 metres high × 1.5 metres wide
Care & Growing Tips
Plant Chamelaucium ‘Local Hero’ in a full sun to part shade position. Best flowering performance is achieved in full sun.
Prefers free-draining soil and performs well in sandy and lighter soil types. Good drainage is essential for long-term health.
Water regularly during establishment, particularly for the first 12 weeks after planting. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant and requires minimal supplementary watering.
Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for Australian native plants annually in spring.
Lightly prune after flowering to encourage dense new growth and improve flowering the following season. Avoid cutting back into old woody stems.
Suitable for exposed sites, sheltered coastal gardens and a wide range of Australian climates. Tolerates light frost once established and performs best in lower humidity regions.
