Prunus ‘Shirotae’, commonly known as Mt Fuji Flowering Cherry, is a beautiful deciduous ornamental tree admired for its abundant white spring blossoms and distinctive wide-spreading branches.

In spring, soft blush-pink buds open into masses of delicate white flowers, hanging gracefully in clusters along the branches. The floral display is particularly impressive against the tree's broad, horizontal branching structure.

As flowering finishes, large green leaves emerge, creating a leafy canopy throughout summer. In autumn, the foliage develops lovely shades of yellow and orange before falling to reveal the tree's attractive spreading framework.

With its naturally broad, layered growth habit, Mt Fuji Flowering Cherry makes an excellent feature tree for gardens with plenty of space to accommodate its impressive canopy.

Mature size: approximately 5 metres high × 10 metres wide

Care & Growing Tips

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare the planting area thoroughly before planting, ensuring the soil is well worked and drains freely.

When planting a grafted tree, keep the graft union above soil level. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent soil moisture while the tree establishes, particularly during extended periods of hot, dry weather.

Apply a suitable slow-release fertiliser at planting and again as new growth develops, following the product's application instructions. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk.

Prune only as required to maintain a balanced shape or remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Light pruning after flowering is preferable to heavy pruning, helping preserve the tree's naturally spreading habit.

Allow plenty of room for its wide, horizontal branches to develop without crowding nearby structures or other trees.
