Chorizema cordatum, commonly known as the Heart-leaf Flame Pea, is a vibrant Australian native shrub prized for its brilliant spring flowers and soft, scrambling growth habit. This eye-catching plant produces clusters of pea-shaped blooms in striking combinations of orange, red, yellow and purple, held above the foliage for maximum impact.

With its naturally light, trailing growth, Heart-leaf Flame Pea works beautifully as an understorey plant, weaving through and around other shrubs, or gently climbing with support. Its soft, heart-shaped green leaves add to its charm, creating a relaxed, cottage-style feel in the garden.

Flowering mainly in late winter to spring, it brings a welcome burst of colour when many other plants are still quiet.

Mature size: approximately 0.8–1 metre high × 1–1.5 metres wide (can climb higher with support)

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in part shade or dappled light in well-drained soil. While it can tolerate a range of soils, good drainage is essential for healthy growth. Avoid full, harsh sun, as this can fade the flowers and reduce visual impact.

Water regularly during dry periods, as this plant performs best with consistent moisture. Once established, it will tolerate some dryness but should not be allowed to dry out completely for extended periods.

Provide support or allow it to grow among other plants for best form. Prune back firmly after flowering (by up to one-third to half) to encourage fresh growth and a strong flowering display the following season.

Ideal for
– Understorey planting
– Native cottage gardens
– Rockeries and informal beds
– Adding colour to shaded areas
– Scrambling through companion plants
