Clematis ‘Belle of Taranaki’ is a beautiful deciduous climbing vine admired for its large, double blue flowers and extended flowering season. Its richly layered blooms create an eye-catching display against fresh green foliage, making it an attractive choice for adding colour and vertical interest to the garden.

Producing flowers approximately 14–16.5cm across, ‘Belle of Taranaki’ features multiple layers of blue petals that give each bloom a full, decorative appearance. Flowering from spring through to autumn, it provides seasonal colour across the warmer months under suitable growing conditions.

A sport of the popular Clematis ‘Multi Blue’, this variety shares its distinctive double-flowered appearance while offering its own ornamental appeal.

With its moderate climbing habit, ‘Belle of Taranaki’ is well suited to trellises, archways, fences and garden supports. Its manageable size also makes it suitable for smaller gardens and large decorative containers, where its beautiful flowers can be enjoyed up close.

As a deciduous climber, ‘Belle of Taranaki’ loses its foliage during winter before producing fresh growth as the weather warms.

Mature size: approximately 2–2.5 metres high, with spread depending on the support and growing conditions.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally in a position receiving morning sunlight with protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne gardens, a sheltered position will help protect the flowers during hot summer weather.

Clematis ‘Belle of Taranaki’ prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the roots cool by applying mulch around the base or planting low-growing companion plants nearby.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the warmer months, particularly while the plant is actively growing and flowering.

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, which can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning Group 2: Clematis ‘Belle of Taranaki’ flowers on both previous season's growth and new growth. Lightly prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead or damaged stems and trimming remaining growth back to strong, healthy buds.

Avoid hard pruning, as this can reduce the early spring flowering display. A light trim after the first flush of flowers may encourage further flowering later in the season.

Provide a trellis, climbing frame or other suitable support for the stems to climb. Clematis climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around slender supports, so fine trellis or garden wire is particularly useful.
