Clematis ‘Mazowsze’ is a striking deciduous climbing vine admired for its large, deep purple-red flowers and vigorous growth habit. Its rich, velvety-looking blooms create a beautiful contrast against fresh green foliage, making it an excellent choice for adding bold colour and vertical interest to the garden.

Producing flowers approximately 13–15cm across, ‘Mazowsze’ features dramatic purple-red colouring that stands out beautifully when trained over trellises, archways and garden supports.

Flowering from late spring through to autumn, this attractive Clematis provides an extended season of colour under suitable growing conditions. Its robust climbing habit makes it particularly well suited to covering fences, climbing frames and larger garden structures.

Growing up to 3.5 metres high, ‘Mazowsze’ works beautifully in cottage-style gardens, mixed borders and alongside other climbing plants. Its deep flower colour provides a striking contrast against white, pale pink and pastel flowering varieties.

As a deciduous climber, ‘Mazowsze’ loses its foliage during winter before producing fresh growth and flowers as the weather warms.

Mature size: approximately 3.5 metres high, with spread depending on the support and growing conditions.

Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally in a position receiving morning sunlight with protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne gardens, a sheltered position can help protect the flowers during hot summer weather.

Clematis ‘Mazowsze’ prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the roots cool by applying mulch around the base or planting low-growing companion plants nearby.

Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the warmer months, particularly while the plant is actively growing and flowering.

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Pruning Group 3: Clematis ‘Mazowsze’ flowers on the current season's new growth and benefits from hard pruning in late winter or early spring.

Cut stems back to approximately 20–40cm above ground level, just above a pair of strong, healthy buds. This encourages vigorous new growth and helps maintain a manageable plant with flowers developing on fresh stems.

Unlike Group 2 Clematis, ‘Mazowsze’ can be pruned hard each year without sacrificing its main flowering display.

Provide a sturdy trellis, climbing frame or other suitable support for its vigorous growth. Clematis climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around slender supports, so fine trellis or garden wire attached to a strong structure is particularly useful.
