Description
Clematis ‘Summer Girl’ is a vibrant deciduous climbing vine admired for its bright, hot pink flowers and vigorous growth habit. Its colourful blooms create an eye-catching display against fresh green foliage, making it an excellent choice for adding colour and vertical interest to the garden.
Producing flowers approximately 10–12cm across, ‘Summer Girl’ features vivid pink blooms that stand out beautifully when trained over trellises, archways and other garden supports.
Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, this attractive Clematis provides a long season of colour under suitable growing conditions. Its vigorous climbing habit makes it particularly well suited to covering fences, climbing frames and garden structures.
Growing to approximately 2.5 metres high, ‘Summer Girl’ works beautifully in cottage-style gardens, mixed borders and alongside other climbing plants. Its hot pink flowers provide a striking contrast against white, purple and blue flowering varieties.
As a deciduous climber, ‘Summer Girl’ loses its foliage during winter before producing fresh growth and flowers as the weather warms.
Mature size: approximately 2–2.5 metres high, with spread depending on the support and growing conditions.
Care & Growing Tips
Plant in full sun to part shade, ideally in a position receiving morning sunlight with protection from harsh afternoon sun. In Melbourne gardens, some afternoon shade can help protect the flowers during hot summer weather.
Clematis ‘Summer Girl’ prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the roots cool by applying mulch around the base or planting low-growing companion plants nearby.
Water regularly during establishment and maintain consistent soil moisture throughout the warmer months, particularly while the plant is actively growing and flowering.
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Pruning Group 3: Clematis ‘Summer Girl’ flowers on the current season's new growth and benefits from hard pruning in late winter or early spring.
Cut stems back to approximately 20–40cm above ground level, just above a pair of strong, healthy buds. This encourages vigorous new growth and helps maintain a manageable plant with flowers developing on fresh stems.
Unlike Group 2 Clematis, ‘Summer Girl’ can be pruned hard each year without sacrificing its main flowering display.
Provide a sturdy trellis, climbing frame or other suitable support for its vigorous growth. Clematis climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around slender supports, so fine trellis or garden wire attached to a strong structure is particularly useful.
